Dave Smith solidified his legendary status in synth engineering when he released the Sequential Prophet 5 in 1978. The Prophet 5 is one of the most important innovations in synthesizer history, as it was the first synthesizer to include a microprocessor, thus allowing musicians to fully program, save, and later recall presets.
Fast-forward to 2015 when the Sequential Prophet 6 was released as an homage to its predecessor, but with some modern enhancements. With the Prophet 6, DSI added onboard 24 bit digital effects (reverb, chorus, phaser, distortion and delay), an arpeggiator, a 64 step sequencer, and more. This six voice synthesizer’s circuit path begins with a pair of VCOs for each voice, capable of generating sawtooth, pulsewidth, and triangle waveforms, plus a sub oscillator for each voice to really fatten up the sound. You’ll also find all the standard synth fare on the panel; ADSR enveloping, high and low pass filters, LFO, a mixer, and a plethora of ways to route and modulate everything.
Crafting a patch from scratch is intuitive for anyone familiar with analog synthesis. There’s room to save 500 of your own patches, in addition to 500 permanent factory presets for those who don’t want to start from scratch.
Pitch bend and Mod wheels sit left of a 49 key semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch and velocity that is comfortable and fun to play. Audio is routed through standard ¼ cabling from the rear panel, where you’ll also find a headphone jack, both USB and DIN ports for MIDI In/Out/Thru, and sustain and expression pedal jacks.
The DSI Sequential Prophet 6 is widely used, and it’s popularity speaks to how amazing a machine it is. If you’re looking for an absolutely no compromise polyphonic analog synthesizer with all the bells and whistles you could hope for, you’ve found one.
